I have been running an HVAC company for almost two years now. This is not my first business, I run two other businesses, and the one I shut down won’t be my last. This was my first attempt at managing a blue collar shop and workforce. It has taken a tremendous amount of my time and money, but I have learned many valuable lessons. It has taught me a lot about the woes of small business ownership and business in general which my other companies couldn’t.
In addition to this, I also attend college full time, have kids, and am constantly renovating our house. Now, finally, this business is shutting down and I’ll have some time for some fun! So, here’s a short and likely incomplete list of all the things I get to try or continue now that I will have more time and extra money to do so!
Writing – I write everyday, every single day, even during these busy times, it has taken a toll on me, see I’ve been slacking, and On Loneliness. I believe that writing can be built and improved upon, so writing everyday is much more for me than it is for you. I’m going to my mental writing gym when I do daily writings. Moreso than putting words on paper or website, there is a lot of time spent on research, character development, dialogue, etc. This is talked about in how I write historical fiction. This leads to bottlenecks on daily quality writing. I sometimes have found myself choosing between making my daily deadline or publishing something of the utmost quality. Due to my approach of viewing writing as a practice, I prefer consistency, but with more time, I hope to see some quality improvement.
Drones – My son and I are finding interest in drones and are looking to buy some DJI drones and learn to fly them.
Camping – It’s heating up and beautiful in the southwest. With more time for all of us, we will be camping more!
Gardening – We are on our second year of gardening, and we have already started our garden. We have tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, Sage, rosemary, shallots, onions, mammoth dill, and flowers growing. We also have a germination station with many more types of plants almost ready to be planted. With more time, we will be expanding our raised beds, and making shade structures for our plants. We will be adding more veg as we learn more.
Beekeeping – Our family has had a growing interest in beekeeping as it goes well with gardening and is beneficial for the environment. I have a fear of bees, and I’m hoping to experience some personal growth, show my kids how to overcome fears, and hopefully massively benefit my garden and get some honey!
Reading – Reading is almost always the first thing that gets cut from my extra time when I get busy. Like writing, I try to read daily, but don’t always hit the mark. I still plan on reading over 36 books this year, and I’m on track to achieving that, now I’ll be able to focus on that now.
Time is an important and often overlooked currency, experience is another. Both I have been exchanging to try to save a business I never should have purchased. Now, I get a return of both!
