On January 15, 1919, the streets of Boston’s North End turned deadly—not with fire or bombs, but with molasses. The molasses was used to produce industrial alcohol, a key ingredient in munitions during World War I, which had just ended two months prior.
From the start, the tank was poorly designed and poorly maintained. It leaked so badly that neighborhood children would scoop up the sweet drippings for treats. USIA tried to mask the leaks by painting the tank brown. More damning: the tank was never properly tested before being filled.
