When you own a business you will often hear some mantra or another about having a ‘team’ in place. From blue collar shops, to real estate agents and corporate boardrooms you will hear it, and it’s different for each setting. If you’re a business owner, you’re probably thinking about you bookkeeper, CPA, attorney, property manager, marketing czar. For me though, there is one, goofy, neglected team member, it’s my auctioneer!

That’s right, the loudmouthed, quirky dude in a cowboy hat and a truck far too big for anyone without a CDL to handle. The one who walks into a room full of complete junk and trash and lets out a loud, ‘whooowweeee! This trash is going to make me some good money!’ I love these type of people. Not only are they unusually friendly, but they have a generally positive outlook on life and are always happy to help.

I had to shut down one of my businesses, I called them to handle the liquidation of assets and clean out the shop. The previous owner was over 80 years old and had doubled the shop as a personal storage unit for some of his junk. These guys took it completely out of my hands, getting rid of everything, cleaning, and wiping down surfaces. Not to mention a pretty penny after liquidation was complete.

But instead of just bragging on their outstanding service, I will discuss about how I actually met and established a relationship with the auctioneer. I have other businesses, and some of them require heavy equipment, I saw a going out of business sign for another business on the way home, it had a few vehicles and a skid steer there. I asked what they wanted for them and they directed me towards the auctioneer. I later ended up buying the skid steer a 2022 skid steer with only 70 hours on it… for $1,200! I was able to use this immediately for jobs and when I wasn’t needing it, I rented it out. The thing paid for itself in less than a week! I continued this trend for several weeks. Even at times buying equipment and attachments and reselling them. This because a fun source of income on the side!

After a few purchases and interactions the auctioneers will become really friendly with you, you’ve become a regular here now! This is where the real partnership comes into play. You see, auctioneers are dealing with large amounts of people, money, and assets. They intersect at the crossroads of assets, and annoyance. Most people who are talking to an auctioneer are usually handling a large estate and want it gone ASAP, or closing/failing businesses. They know a lot of people who need help, they know where opportunities are, they know when the markets are turning before a lot of people. They are also amazing deal finders, if they don’t have it, they usually know someone who does or will soon stumble upon what you’re looking for. If you’re one of their regulars, you’re getting the first call when it comes available.
