April 10th 1953, The horror film starring Vincent Price, House of Wax, premiered in New York City at the historic Paramount Theater. This Warner Bros film would make cinematic history as the first color film in 3-D. That’s correct, 3D full color movies back in the fifties!
Filmmakers did this by using the stereoscopic 3-D film method. This meant using two cameras of a single twin-lensed camera to replicate the left and right eyes that we see from. These two images would be plastered over each other slightly off from one another. During this premier, the moviegoers had to use special stereoscopic glasses (3D glasses) in order to get the effect. Interestingly enough, the first ever 3D film (in black and white film called the Man in the Dark) was released only two days prior to House of Wax.
