March 21, 1871 a journalist named Henry Morton Stanley left from Zanzibar to the greater Africa. Stanley was on the search for fellow Englishman David Livingstone. Six years prior Dr. Livingstone had begun a planned two year expedition to find the heart of the Nile River. Despite it being over 6 years, nobody had heard from Dr. Livingstone, nor of his planned expedition.
James Bennett Jr, who was the editor for the New York Herald, seemed that this was an opportunity for a story. Bennett sent Stanley on assignment to find and interview Livingstone, or bring back proof of his death. Stanley would eventually find Dr. Livingstone who was living at the mercy of an Arabic slave trader, at the edge of Lake Tanganyika.
After much discussion and an interview, Livingstone concluded that he will not be leaving back to London with Stanley, but instead preferred to stay. Livingstone ultimately returned to England against his will, he died roughly eighteen months later and was buried in Westminster Abbey.
