Two nameless men sat down together on a bunch of scaffolding overlooking London. They observed the hazy sky, construction sprawled out before and beneath them.

The two chatted about the work or the day and their respective plans for the weekend.

As they were talking, a rat approached behind them, sniffing around silently. Rats were a common sight, so even if it had been noticed, it likely would have been ignored. The rat began to go through a lunch sack and found a sandwich, it pulled it out and scurried off with it.

‘Well, I’m going to go get my lunch now. Would you like a bite?’ One of the men said walking up to the bench his lunch was on.

‘No thank you chap, I just ate.’ The other said rubbing his belly.

The first worker looked at amazement at the bench as he realized his sandwich was missing.

‘Eh! Where was your lunch?’ The worker asked.

‘On that bench, just like yours.’ He responded.

The first worker started to get irritated. ‘No you see, there was only one lunch here.’

‘I’m afraid you’re mistaken. I had mine right before I sat down with you. There was two when I ate mine.’

‘That’s convenient.’ The shorted worker said.

‘You know, I think you ate my lunch.’ He continued.

‘I wouldn’t do that.’

‘Maybe it was an accident. Maybe you thought it was yours, a simple apology will set us right.’ The worker said leaning on the bench.

‘I don’t see why I would need to apologize I did nothing wrong.’ The seated worker maintained his innocence.

The worker became enraged and charged at the man sitting down. The seated man quickly got up in a squatted position and attempted to stop the attack.

The two men collided, falling onto the scaffolding, wrestling each other. Other workers heard the fighting and began to run over to break it up. As they were wrestling one of the men rolled, grabbing the other and taking both of them off the scaffolding. They plunged to their deaths. In the distance sat the rat who had taken the sandwich, munching on (now) his lunch, watching in the distance almost mocking them.
